What is Equine Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation?

Equine Physiotherapy can play a vital role in managing long-term conditions, supporting older horses, and maintaining overall wellbeing. It helps to preserve and improve strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness, while restoring normal movement patterns. For many horses, it can make a real difference in comfort, performance, and quality of life.

Physiotherapy combines hands-on manual techniques with the use of specialist therapy equipment. Manual therapy alone can bring significant benefits, but when used alongside the right equipment, the results can be even more effective (The College of Animal Physiotherapy). At Sky Equine, we work not only with ‘muscular back’ issues, but also tendon and ligament injuries, and rehabilitation from a range of conditions.

Massage remains an important part of the work we do. It can be offered as a stand-alone treatment, or as part of a wider rehabilitation plan, helping to release tension, improve movement, and enhance your horse’s way of going.

Equine Rehabilitation is the structured recovery from injury or weakness. Whether your horse is recovering from tendon or ligament issues, regaining strength after box rest, or returning to competition work, we liaise closely with your vet to ensure a safe, progressive approach.

We believe recovery is won or lost in the detail. Rehabilitation can be time-intensive and requires a tailored, consistent plan. Our intensive physiotherapy and massage packages are designed to lay the foundation for a successful recovery — and we have a proven track record of helping horses return to peak performance.

We also work closely with a trusted network of local therapists, allowing us to provide additional support during appointments where needed.

Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Treatments

  • Sports Massage Therapy

Sports massage therapy uses targeted soft tissue techniques to release tension, improve circulation, and enhance muscle function.

We use massage to help maintain muscle health, support recovery after exercise, and address areas of tightness that may affect performance.

    Other benefits include:

    Improved range of motion

    Reduced risk of injury

    Enhanced relaxation and wellbeing

  • Medical Taping - Vetkin

Medical Taping is a form of kinesiology taping using elasticated tape to support the musculoskeletal system.

We use Vetkin Tape, which has a pre-stretch for optimal comfort and effectiveness. It can be applied for non-medicated pain relief, fascia support, and to aid proprioception.

    Other benefits include:

    Joint stabilisation

    Improved muscle function

    Enhanced blood and lymph circulation

  • Epiony Heat Pad Therapy

Epiony Heat Pad Therapy uses soothing heat to relax muscles, improve blood flow, and ease discomfort.

We use the Epiony Heat Pad to help prepare muscles before exercise, aid recovery afterwards, and provide gentle relief from stiffness.

    Other benefits include:

    Reduction of muscle tension

    Improved flexibility

    Support for rehabilitation programmes

  • TENS & NMES Therapy

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) and NMES (Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation) use gentle electrical impulses to relieve pain and stimulate muscle activity.

We use these therapies to manage discomfort, improve muscle tone, and support recovery from injury or surgery.

    Other benefits include:

    Reduced muscle spasms

    Improved circulation

    Support for muscle strengthening

  • PEMF and Red Light Therapy

PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy and red light therapy work at a cellular level to promote healing, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation.

We use professional-grade PEMF equipment alongside targeted red light application to help accelerate tissue repair, support recovery from injury, and maintain muscle health.

    Other benefits include:

    Reduced muscle tension and soreness

    Improved joint mobility

Faster healing after injury or surgery

  • Therapeutic Ultrasound

Therapeutic ultrasound uses sound waves to penetrate deep into tissues, increasing blood flow and promoting healing.

We use ultrasound to target specific problem areas, especially in tendon and ligament injuries, to encourage repair and reduce swelling.

    Other benefits include:

    Reduction of scar tissue

    Decrease in chronic pain

  • Yoga Blocks

Yoga blocks are a simple but effective tool for improving a horse’s balance, core strength, and flexibility.

We use them as part of targeted exercise sessions to encourage correct posture and muscle engagement.

    Other benefits include:

    Improved core stability

    Enhanced limb coordination

    Support for injury prevention

  • ARC Equine

The ARC Equine is a microcurrent therapy device designed to aid natural healing processes in horses.

We use it to help manage pain, reduce inflammation, and support recovery from a range of injuries and conditions.

    Other benefits include:

    Improved circulation

    Faster tissue repair

    Reduced recovery times

  • Body Mobilisation and Stretching

Body mobilisation and stretching techniques help restore flexibility, improve movement, and release muscle tension.

We use a variety of gentle, controlled stretches to target specific muscle groups and joints.

    Other benefits include:

    Increased range of motion

    Better posture and balance

    Enhanced performance

  • Muscle Tension Release Tools

We use a range of professional tools to help release deep-seated muscle tension and improve comfort.

These are selected based on your horse’s needs and are often combined with manual massage techniques.

    Other benefits include:

    Improved muscle function

    Faster recovery after exercise

    Reduction in stiffness
